Powering up piccolo launchpad

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Piccolo launchpad and am trying to do a motor control application using it. I'm a little confused how to power up the launchpad. Is the micro controller powered up by USB or do I have to apply power externally to one of those 3.3 V or 5 V pins? Also what are the jumpers JP1 JP2 and JP3 used for?

Hi Jingzhe,

The launchpad is USB powered; so no need of external supply.

Jingzhe,

The LaunchPad can be powered by USB or an external source. When it is powered by an external source the JTAG connection is electrically isolated (this helps to protect your computer from transients in high power applications).

The jumpers connect the debugger power domain to the piccolo power domain so it can be powered from USB.

Hi Trey,

thank you. Just one more tiny question. If I wish to power the device by USB, do all of JP1 JP2 and JP3 need to be jumpered? Or do I just jumper one or two of them?

JP1 and JP2 are required, JP3 is optional. JP1 connects 3.3V, JP2 connects GND, JP3 connects 5V.
