Why the DRV8312 shunt current can be bidirectional

Dear all,

I finally understood the current sensing part of the DRV8312. But one more question is that, if I use DRV8312 to turn a PMSM motor, then how could the current through each phase shunt be bidirectional?

More specifically, I am using the SVPMW and FOC technique to control the PMSM motor, so can some one tell me in which conditions, the current through one particular phase shunt is positive and also in which conditions, the current through the same phase shunt is negative?

Thanks for any answer!
