Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1101
I'm looking for initial applications/sales support in determining if PLC is viable for my non-smart grid application.
I need to communicate within a building. A single master, multiple slaves. Data rate can vary from very slow (maybe even 300bps?) to approximately 500kbps, bi-directional. I have to use existing mains wiring or go wireless. The communication needs to be secure and reliable. Given multiple price performance options we would likely wind up putting at least two different product lines into production (good - better - best).
In addition to the communications, I will need some A to D and D to A functionality, some GPIO, some applications EEPROM that could be provided by the modem micro controller or by a second microcontroller if necessary.
As a means of comparison, I am looking at doing this same communications function using a CC1101 radio module ($10/1K). Cost isn't everything but a 10x difference won't fly.
It would seem that this could be a good application for PLC but most of the apps data is targeted at smart grid and metering, not general purpose communications some its hard to see if its really a good fit or not and if so, what the best options/drawbacks are.
What would be ideal would be a conversation with someone experienced in PLC that could quickly discuss the fit, cost, complexity, pitfalls etc.
Thanks
