C2000 Launchpad External Power (NOT USB)

Hello,

I need to power up the C2000 Launchpad from an external power source other than USB.

For that I have two options :- 1. Jumper J3 for 3.3V input and
                                                    2. 5V on pin 1 of jumper J5.

Launchpad works when I connect 5V on J5.1 but when I connect 3.3V at J3 Vcc, it doesn't work.

Power LED(Green) is OK but RED LED is OFF. I set the J1, J2, J3 jumpers according to this article :-

http://www.forum.c2kcentral.com/topic/177-vcc-33v-or-5v

So what is the correct method, Jumper positions etc. to power the Launchpad with external source ?

Thanks,

Vikas

  • Hello,

As I remembered and based on user guide, if you want to feed the power from J3, you should remove the jumper on JP1, JP2, and JP3.

Green LED should be ON, but Red LED should be OFF (because it is feed from USB).

    Best regards,

    Maria

  • In the linked thread, Trey says:

"You can connect 5V at J5.1 and ground wherever.  JP1 JP2 and JP3 will need to be jumpered. Try looking at the schematic of the LaunchPad an understanding why they need to be jumpered."

In this case, 5V is supplied externally, and then 3.3V is generated by onboard LDO.  This should completely power the launchpad.

Now, you could also supply 3.3V externally.  In this case, I think you want to remove JP1 and supply the 3.3V to pin 2 of JP1.

The C2000 device itself only needs 3.3V to operate.  I think you could remove the 5V supply, and the device should still run (assuming you have burned the necessary code into non-volatile flash memory).  This has the caveat that the debug interface will not be powered and the 5V pins on the launchpad header will be unpowered.
