Not able to connect to TMDSHVMTRINSPIN Kit using GUI Composer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSHVMTRINSPIN, CONTROLSUITE

I have recently purchased the TMDSHVMTRINSPIN kit to evaluate Instaspin motion. I am trying to get started with InstaSpin Motion using the GUI Composer software. After installation,it is suggested in the quick start guide that The USB Port on the Control card be connected to the PC USB. On powering the kit with the low voltage DC power supply & then connecting the cable to the USB port, I should see TIXDS100 Channel A & B appearing in the Device manager. This is not happening & hence I cannot proceed. Tried on multiple USB ports & PCs with no success.

Some Details:

High Voltage: hvmtrkit_r1p1 [Yellow PCB with black enclosure]
 PN: TMDSHVMTRINSPIN

Jumper settings done as per QSG:

TMDSCNCD28069MISO
i. SW1: UP-UP
ii. SW2: DOWN-DOWN
iii. SW3: UP-UP

HVMTR_r1p1
i. Populate: J3, J4, J5, J8,
ii. Populate: M3-J5
iii. J7: Right-Middle (towards capacitors)

Any help would be appreciated since I cannot proceed.

  • Hello,

Did you populate J9? If so, remove this (do not populate J9 with jumper while you are using USB JTAG from ISO ControlCard).

    Best regards,

    Maria

  • Hi Maria,

Thanks for your reply. J9 was always not populated but problem persists.

  • Hello,

Are the LEDs ON on M6 and ControlCard?

Is there no recognition at all from Device Manager, even as unknown device?

Have you tried another USB cable?

Can you provide the image of your HVKIT while you are powering it (so we can check it together)?

    Best regards,

    Maria

  • Hi,

Yes tried another USB cable & verified its functionality. Cable is OK.

The following LEDs are ON (Refer Image below):

    M6 - LD1

On the control card - LD1 and LD4

    Thanks,

    Ashley.

  • And in Device Manager, is there any unknown device or something?

Also, have you installed CCS in your PC?

What is the version of your ControlCard?

My ControlCard version is 0.2 and there is no J200 and its related components populated. I am not sure this is the cause.

    Best regards,

    Maria

  • Nothing appears in the Device Manager. Not even unknown device.

No I have no yet installed CCS in my PC. Is this required for running with GUI Composer?

Version of my control card is 0.2. No idea about why there should be J200 missing in your board when the revision is the same.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Ashley.

  • Can you try a different PC?  It seems to me like it is just a matter of your USB port recognizing the UART connection. We see this sometimes, though very rarely.

  • Thanks for the feedback. We tried multiple PC's without success. However, we have finally solved the problem. It was a hardware problem on the control card. Pins 40 and 41 on the FTDI chip were short (RTS & CTS lines). The short was due to a PCB manufacturing defect in which the 2 tracks were shorted. On isolating the short, the control card was detected by the PC & we were able to even run the motor with the kit.

    Thanks for the support.

    Regards,

    Ashley.

  • Hi Maria,

Just an update. We have solved the problem.

  • That is quite strange. I've never heard of this happening with any controlCARD.

I'll forward this to the manufacturer so they are aware.

I apologize for the quality issue and all the time you spent debugging. Let me know if there is anything I can do to make it right.

  • Hello Ashley,

I am glad you found the problem.

I think if it is still in guarantee (usually 1 month after puschasing), you can return it and get replacement.

    Have nice days and cheers!

    Best regards,

    Maria

  • Hi,

Thanks for your concern. However, local TI support in Pune, India has been very good. They were here with a spare control card which concluded that the problem was with the control card & also tried to arrange a free replacement. On that confidence we decided to attempt a repair & we got lucky !!

    Warm Regards,

    Ashley.

  • Hello Maria T.

Sorry to boder you. I hope you could help me. I have some questions about JTAG:

1-When does [M3]-J9 should be populated? ...only whe ones desire to use JTAG in the MCUF2806x?

    2-When should I populate [M3]-J5?

3-Could I use [M3]-JP1 (JTAG Emulator XDS100) located in the C2000 HVMTR (Yellow PCB and Black enclosure)? Which jumpers must I populate?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Uriel,

Please refer to the kit schematic that can be found here:

    controlSUITE\development_kits\HVMotorCtrl+PfcKit_v2.1\~HVMotorCtrl+PFC-HWdevPkg\HVMotorCtrl+PFCKit-R1.1

    1. There is no [M3]-J9. But if you mean [Main]-J9, it is connected to TRSTn pin of MCU and ISO chip in [M3] (to JTAG). By putting jumper on it, you connect TRSTn pin from the MCU and ISO chip of [M3].

If you have F28069MISO ControlCard, you don't populate the jumper, because you will not connect to ISO chip in [M3]. You will use ISO chip in ControlCard, and connect-disconnect TRSTn pin by switch 3 position 1 (for debugging or standalone).

If you have another ControlCard (for example F28027F ControlCard) which has no ISO chips on it and no emulator on card, you will need to populate the jumper of [Main]-J9 so TRSTn pin can connect to ISO chip in [M3] which is used by emulator (JTAG) in [M3]. This will work just like switch 3 position 1 to connect-disconnect the TRSTn pin.

    2. [M3]-J5 should be populated if you want to use emulator from ControlCard.

If you want to use emulator on the kit, this should be unpopulated.

    3. Yes you can if your ControlCard is not the ISO one.

I am not sure if your controlCard is the ISO one (emulator on card), whether you can use the emulator on the kit or not. I have never tried it.

You can try to switch off SW3 position 1 on ISO controlcard (to disconnect TRSTn to ISO chip on card), then populate [Main]-J9, and unpopulate [M3]-J5. Please let me know the result if you try it, because I can not try it by myself now and I am wondering too. Thanks!

    Best regards,

    Maria
