Bi-Directional isolated DC-DC converter

I have to design a Bi-Directional isolated DC-DC for energy storage in a PV system at 3kW.
Now I see there's a C2000 + software library and some referenc3e design.

But I have a few questions before to start this project:
1) which is the best topology?
2) is it enough the C2000 + software library or not?
3) other suggestion...

Thank You in advance and Best Regards

  • Hi Federico,

    We have some example designs for both isolated and non-isolated bi-directional DC-DC converters. The choice of topology will depend on the input-output voltage levels along with the rated power level. We have a 400V - 12V bi-directional isolated DC-DC converter TI design (http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDM-BIDIR-400-12). It works as a phase shifted full-bridge converter in buck mode and as a current fed push-pull converter in boost mode. This may be a topology to explore for the 3kW level.

    Typically the software we provide works as a good reference and an excellent starting point for developing solutions.

    Let me know if  you have more questions/concerns once you finalize the topology.

  • Hello Hrishi,in first thank You for yoru reply.

    Yes, I saw the reference design that You highlight me. I downloaded all documentation about solar, inverter and similar things.

    For the refertence design You highlight me, the power is very low, rather than my power target, that is 3-4kW (in real 4,5kW). And so I don't know if the topology is the same.

    In any case, the project is this:
    I have a connection between PhotoVoltaic (PV) string and inverter. I need to cut this connection and put in the middle my device, that is an Energy Storage System ESS). So the input voltage from PV is 100-580Vdc, 30A max. The output voltage to Inveter is 150-500Vdc. And I have a 48Vdc battery pack with capacity of 90-200Ah.
    The bi-directional DC-DC converter must charge the battery when the inverter requires low power, maybe using a MPPT algorithm. Instead in the evening/night the battery pack supplyes the inverter.
    In Internet I found different tolopogy, but I don't know:
    1) which is the best;
    2) if I can use TI library for Piccolo microcontroller;
    3) if it's possible to have a real help from TI.

    if You want to understand better this ESS, please, see this SP2000 product from Growatt at this link: http://www.ginverter.com/html/2014/07/17/20140717113533512943100.html

    Thank You and Best Regards

  • Hello Federico,

    I am also interested in this evaluation board for my research in pv microgrid. As far as I know, TI don't sell this board. Also, I may not have enough time to build the board by reference design. So, could you tell me how did you get this board? By your own design or request from TI?

    Thanks very much!

  • HI,

    i have downloaded the "Bidirectional 400V-12V DC/DC Converter Reference Design" Gerber file.

    but provided Schematics in that package is not opening in Altium and Orcad as well.

    Please confirm the software in which this file "SCH_BiDirDCDC_07_09_14_HN.sch"  is designed. and also the version of software as well.

    or please provide the altium 2015 or orcad 16.6 format file.

    Regards,

  • Hello Federico
    My customer want us provide the precision about the out Voltage and current. They want to use it to charge buttery. As you know,the buttery charge mode need two stage , one is constant current , the other is constant voltage. They want the current precision to one over one thousand. Could you give some comment about it?
