Hi;

I am using;

tms320f28027f, c2000 launchpad with a maxon bldc motor and drv8301 motor drive.

I want to get this motor to run as a generator.

I don't know how!

I have been advised to use the instapin FOC

But I am clueless as to what parameters to change, and as to how I will know if the machine is indeed operating as a generator!

My understanding is the current vector "iq" should be negative, i.e. the produced magnetic field south pole should align with the rotors magnetic north.

I was thinking of; driving the rotor externally, faster than the reference speed I input to instaspin. The hope is that the stator field will lag

the rotor field in a similar way to that of a ACIM.

If I am wrong, please indicate where?

How can I use the FOC to create a generator?

  • a motor is operating as a generator when the rotor is moving without energy from the inverter. meaning the rotor vs. stator interaction is then producing voltages which appear on each of the phases, hence on the bus.

    you can control the inverter switching to control the generation. you can even control the peak current (Iq_Ref_A in our InstaSPIN-FOC solution). You can add additional software control if you want to monitor and control the Vbus.

    with the projects in MotorWare you can set a limit for the peak current generation through Iq_Ref_A (this will typically be a negative current assuming the direction of rotation is aligned). We do not have a control setting for the Vbus, you would have to add this control logic yourself. Essentially you would monitor Vbus and once it reaches a limit (or a window of a limit) you can adjust the Iq_Ref_value.
