How can I use InstaSPIN-BLDC in MotorWare?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MOTORWARE, INSTASPIN-BLDC, BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM, CONTROLSUITE

Dear all,

I am planning to control BLDC motor using TI's BoostXL-DRV8305N ()  and MotorWare. But I don't find the firmware in MotorWare package that supports for controlling BLDC motor with InstaSPIN-BLDC feature. So I want you to help me:

1. Show me where the library of InstaSPIN-BLDC is? Where do I find demo examples of using Motorware to control BLDC motor?

2. How I use InstaSPIN-BLDC in MotorWare to control BLDC be similar to use InstaSPIN-FOC to control ACIM and PMSM motor?

3. Whether the   introduced here can be compatible with the MotorWare package or not?

Thank you in advance!

  • InstaSPIN-BLDC is not supported in MotorWare, only in controlSUITE on DRV8312-C2-KIT and DRV830x-HC-C2-KIT.

BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM is supported in MotorWare with InstaSPIN-FOC and InstaSPIN-MOTION.

BLDC motors can absolutely be controlled by InstaSPIN-FOC and -MOTION.
  • Thanks Chris for your answers,

But I have some more questions:

    1. Why did not TI integrated InstaSPIN-BLDC in MotorWare, like InstaSPIN-FOC and InstaSPIN-MOTION?

    2. According to my research, the commutation in controlling a BLDC motor is different from the commutation in controlling a PMSM or ACIM motor. Moreover, SVM and vector control (in current loop) cannot be applied in controlling BLDC motor. So why you said "BLDC motors can absolutely be controlled by InstaSPIN-FOC and -MOTION"?

    3. I want to understand the detailed implement in InstaSPIN-BLDC that TI introduced in the following video:

    www.youtube.com/watch

So how can I get a document in which the algorithm is described in detailed?

    4. Do you think TI MotorWare team should integrate InstaSPIN-BLDC in the next version of MotorWare?

Thank you for your time to discuss with me!

  • 1. because we released -BLDC before MotorWare was every built. And they are very different. The simplified approach in controlSUITE is better for BLDC.

    2. The commutation is much different. Absolutely you can apply SVM and vector control to a BLDC motor.

    3. We do not describe the algorithm beyond the videos. But the videos go into great detail about measuring the integrated Bemf and using a user supplied threshold to set the commutation. It's very straight forward.

    4. No we will not

    You are welcome, Tran.
  • Dear Chris,

Thank you so much for your answers.

I have found a document from TI Website which prove that BLDC motor can be controlled by InstaSPIN-FOC. And now I understood how different between InstaSPIN-BLDC and InstaSPIN-FOC is.

Thank you and thank the following document:

I can continue to contact with you to inform the result. But one more question for you: Whether can I use  LAUNCHXL-F28069M with the BOOSTXL-DRV8301 to run a BLDC motor such as BLY172S-24V-4000?

    Have a good day!
