LAUNCHXL-F28379D

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28379D, CONTROLSUITE, TMDSDOCK28379D, TMDSCNCD28379D

We would like to buy some LAUNCHXL-F28379D boards:

www.ti.com/.../LAUNCHXL-F28379D

And we want to have the access to all the GPIO channels. We would like to know if LAUNCHXL-F28379D itself can provide us with the access to all the GPIO channels or we need to buy a corresponding BoosterPack for LAUNCHXL-F28379D?

In the "User's Guide" of LAUNCHXL-F28379D (http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sprui77/sprui77.pdf), it is said that:

"Connecting a BoosterPack The F2837xD LaunchPad is the perfect experimenter board to start hardware development with the F2837xD devices. All of the connectors are aligned in a 0.1-in (2.54-mm) grid to allow easy and inexpensive development of add on boards called BoosterPacks. These satellite boards can access all of the GPIO and analog signals."

It seems that we need an additional BoosterPack to get the access to all the GPIOs. If this is really the case, then can anyone provide us with the product code of the BoosterPack?

Thanks!

  • Hi Junfei,

The F28379D LaunchPad (or its BoosterPacks, which plug into LaunchPads) will not give you access to all of the F28379D device's GPIO/ADC channels - only a subset.  I will have a bug filed to try and clarify the documentation.  Please note that the 337ball BGA device used on the launchPAD has 168 GPIO pins, 24 ADC input pins and many power/ground/etc pins.

I would recommend taking a look at the F28379D LaunchPad schematics, which can be found within controlSUITE at the below directory.  Even though it does not give access to all pins, you may find that it gives enough pin access for your project :
    \controlSUITE\development_kits\LAUNCHXL-F28379D\

If you find that the F28379D does not provide you with adequate GPIO/ADC pins, I would recommend looking at the F28379D Experimenter's Kit (TMDSDOCK28379D).  It sends more (almost all, but still not all) of the device pins to headers.
    \controlSUITE\development_kits\~controlCARDs\TMDSCNCD28379D_v1_0\

    Hopefully this helps!

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

Thank you very much for your reply!

I think maybe I need to elaborate our project a little more.

In our project, we actually do not need many ADC input channels, instead, we really need 24 PWM output channels, which means 12 independent PWM signals + 12 complementary signals. We have analyzed the document "LAUNCHXL-F28379D Overview User's Guide" and we realized that according to "6.1 Device Pin Out" of the document, LAUNCHXL-F28379D can only get access to 12 PWM output channels, from EPWM1A until EPWM6B.

Now we are looking for solutions which can provide us with the access to all of the 24 PWM output channels. We have also found that "Figure 9. LAUNCHXL-F28379D_IO1 Schematic" shows 24 PWM output channels, from EPWM1A until EPWM12B. Can you tell us what does that "LAUNCHXL-F28379D_IO1 Schematic" show? And by considering the information in "5.4 Connecting a BoosterPack", we think maybe we can connect LAUNCHXL-F28379D to some kind of BoosterPack and then we can get access to all the 24 PWM output channels. Is it possible?

We are wondering if you can provide us with simple solutions to get access to all of the 24 PWM output channels. We can sacrifice some ADC input channels but we need to guarantee 24 PWM output channels. We prefer the solutions by connecting the launch pad to some other satellite boards, since we have several other projects going in parallel and the launch pad itself is sufficient for them.

Thank you very much and we are looking forward to your reply!

    Sincerely,

    Junfei Tang

  • Hi Junfei,

Figure 9 in the Overview document depicts a portion of the F28379D device (U14).  Note that the device itself has 12 * 2 PWM outputs, but the launchPAD does not bring them all to headers.  (for example notice that in the schematic, the GPIO13 net does not go to a connector, nor anywhere else on the board.

As described in my previous post, the wording in section 5.4 is potentially misleading.  Being a plug-in board, the boosterPACK can only utilize signals which come from the mated launchPAD.

    ===

If a careful look at the schematics is done, I think you'll find that more than 6*2 PWM outputs can be utilized via the launchPAD headers (because of the internal GPIO muxing/configurability capability within the device).  However, I'm relatively certain that you won't be able to get 12*2 PWM outputs.

If you're project truly needs 12*2 PWMs, I'd recommend considering the Experimenter's Kit - as mentioned above.

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

Thank you very much for your reply!

Now we are clear about the situation and we are going to consider F28379D Delfino Experimenter Kit as you have suggested. However, on the webpage of the F28379D Delfino Experimenter Kit, we can find the datasheet about the MCU but we currently cannot find the datasheet about the Experimenter Kit itself. And under the "Features" of the Kit, it is said that "Header pin access to key MCU signals". "key signals" means "not all of them". Therefore, at least up to now, I am not sure if it has the access to all the 12*2 PWM output channels. Maybe you can show us some document which indicates the pin table of the Kit?

    Thank you very much!

    Sincerely,

    Junfei Tang
  • Hi Junfei,

The muxing information is best found from the F28379D device datasheet:
    http://www.ti.com/product/TMS320F28379D

Table 4-4 (GPIO Muxed Pins) of the current datasheet (SPRS880G) will most likely be the most useful table for you.

You can then compare GPIO pins which come to headers on the connector vs the GPIO pins' mux table in the datasheet.

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hello Brett,

Thank you for your information. Now we have decided to buy this "TMDSDOCK28379D". However, when I add them to the cart, it says that "Due to export restrictions, we are unable to ship this part of your country. Please remove to continue." I am wondering what is this kind of restrictions between USA and Sweden, and how can we move forward to buy this Kit.

    Thank you very much!

    Sincerely,

    Junfei Tang

  • Hi Junfei,

Unforunately, due to new EU compliance regulations, some shipment of kits to the EU may get delayed.

We are looking to come up with a solution to this problem as soon as possible, but it may take several months.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate the interest you have in our device.

    Thank you,
    Brett

  • Hi Brett,

I see. We have also contacted the custom service and we got a similar answer. We have contacted Mouser in Sweden and they said that maybe we would be able to get the LAUNCHXL-F28379D in January.

Thank you very much for your reply!

    Sincerely,

    Junfei Tang
