LAUNCHXL-F28069M: cannot connect via putty - no COM port shown in device manager

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28069M

Hello -

I am attempting to review the "Out-of-box" demo temperature data via putty.

However, I do not see a COM port in my Device manager.   I clicked "show hidden devices" and still no COM port listed.

I saw another post where a user didn't see a COM port, but when they selected the check box "Load VCP" under the Universal Serial Bus Controller TI XDS100 Channel A and B the COM port showed up.   Checking the "Load VCP" box was not successful for me.

I tried to connect with all 4 J6/J7 jumper configurations just to be sure I didn't miss anything.   Out of the box it was J6 no-jumper and J7 with jumper.

I have not changed any of the power jumper settings from what they were set to out of the box.   I'm not using a booster pack.  I get power from the USB line, so looking at the user guide, it seems correct to leave the jumpers 1-5 where they are (all 5 jumpers are "jumped" - the jumpers are in place).   Have I misinterpreted this?

I uninstalled and reinstalled the XDS100 drivers.   That did not help either.

Would appreciate some advice.

Thank-you!

As far as I recollect, the above was the solution for no COM port issue for this launchpad. What do you mean by "not successful for me" ? The checkbox is greyed out?

  • Hello Gautam,

The check boxes were not greyed out. They were selectable.

Yesterday I tried every combination of selecting and deselecting the "Load VCP" checkboxes.

First, I checked only the box for Channel A. But no COM port connection appeared.
Then I checked the box on Channel B (now both channels were checked). And still no COM port connection.
Then I deselected the "Load VCP" box on channel A (now only channel B was selected). Still no COM port connection.

Then I shut down for the night.

This morning I rebooted and re-connected and channel B's Load VCP box was still checked. This time, a COM port opened!

But, there is still a bit more strange behavior. I shut down. Went to work. Rebooted and now both Load VCP boxes were deselected. I don't understand why, but it seems that these selections don't always stay selected from one startup to the next.

Also - when I select the "Load VCP" boxes on both Channels, I see 2 COM ports. But only the port associated with Channel B will communicate the out-of-box data via Putty (41 Celcius = ref + 8). It's a high temp, but I'm delighted it's communicating.

Why are there 2 channels/ports showing up? I thought it might be because there are two UARTs on the F28069M, but I wouldn't expect both to be accessible through the UART/JTAG.

I agree that selecting the Load VCP checkbox(s) is the correct solution. But after checking, folks may need to re-connect the LaunchXL for the selection to take effect. Also, it's unclear to me whether we should select both "Load VCP" check boxes or just one.

    Thanks!
