TMS320F28335: CAN communcation -- required hardware for F28335 experimenter kit

Hi all

So far I was able to enable RTDS and serial communication but for data logging (e.g. recording faster signals, 50 Hz and more) in flash memory only an example for Matalb Simulink is provided with CAN communication in External Mode.

There it is mentioned I have to use "variety of CAN interface cards for your host. You will also need appropriate cables and transceivers".

Can You please recommend some of the hardware (interface cards, transceivers, etc) and how it is connected to the experimental kit card? I suppose CAN transceiver module is connected to the J3 Rx and Tx and its output to the interface card whose output is connected to the PC.

Hi Mike,

You'll need an additonal CAN transceiver circuitry. You can select one from here: www.ti.com/.../can-products.page
Build upon the same using application note. Secondly , CANTX & CANRX is what you'll have to tap from the experimenter kit.

so now I am bit confused...

Do I need interface card or not after all?

Or I just connect transceiver's TXD, GND, VCC and RTD to connector J3?

But than, where are pins CANH and CANL located on the experimental kit?

Those pins are for UART/SCI and not CAN communication.

GPIO18 and GPIO19 are CANRXA and CANTXA respectively. In the above CAN Transceiver RXD and TXD are equivalent to these RXA and TXA signals from controller. You also have CANRXB and CANTXB accordingly.

But how to connect transceiver output to PC?

Can I than use simple RS232 to USB cable or need some additional interface card?

If you're looking for interfacing CAN with your PC then you need an interface card to convert CAN to USB/UART. You can search for "can to usb converter".

You can take a look at the latest F28377 launchpads - there are CAN transceivers built in to the boards - the only boards that I know of that have them. (Someone correct me if I am wrong!)
