LAUNCHXL-F28377S: Demo program not running upon power up, no serial connection

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28377S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28377S

I've recently purchased a C2000 Microcontroller TMS320F28377S LaunchadPad development kit, LAUNCHXL-F28377S.

According to the instructions in the box, upon power-up via USB, the LEDs should blink in a certain manner, then default to some demo program.

From the first time I powered it on and everytime since, the LEDs have not blinked.  A few LEDs come up indicating power, but the blue LED only flashes on briefly before remaining off.

Trying to open PUTTY to get a serial connection, it does not work.  I've verified (in the device manager on Windows and in Putty) the baud rate, the stop bit, flow control, etc, but still no luck.

When trying to verify the connection to the XDS100V2 USB Debug probe in CCS, I get the following message (below the rest of the description).

There is nothing I can do, to my knowledge, to configure on the board.  Even moving the boot switches around does not seem to make a difference.  There aren't any jumpers on the board apart from the power between the XDS stuff to the main part of the board.

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Taylor,

When you attempt to connect to the device through the emulator, are all the boot switches in the on position?
Do the device feel hot to the touch? You can check the 3.3V and 5V supplies to ensure that they are at the proper voltages. You can also feel the F28377S to see if it is hot to the touch. This could help determine if there is damage to the device itself.

I have set up my board with jumpers only on JP1 and JP2. To boot to flash, boot1 and boot2 are in the on position, boot3 is off. I am using TeraTerm with the baud settings of 115200, 8-bit data, no parity and 1 stop bit.
To connect to the device, I switch boot3 on and then launch a debug session in CCS.
  • Thank you Mark. I've verified that boot1 and boot2 are on, with boot3 as off. I verified 5V and 3.3V on the pins. No heat. Still no flashing upon startup, although D9 and D10 LEDs were powered on. No serial data coming in; I tried TeraTerm this time. Unfortunately, while double checking the voltage readings, I appeared to short out 5V and GND momentarily -- mistake on my part. Now nothing powers up and there is some heat on the debugger side of the board.
  • Honestly, if there is now local heating on the emulator side, the board might be damaged. It is very difficult to diagnose which circuit might be failing from here. I would recommend testing the power circuitry with a voltmeter, look for shorts between power and ground pins (with the board un-powered). You can also observe JTAG signals coming from the emulator to see if anything is toggling as it should. Be meticulous in checking the signals. If you find any part that appears to have damage you should be able to replace it.

    -Mark

  • Taylor,

Have you been able to find a root cause for your issue? It would be nice to see if you have traced it back to the root so that others might learn from your experience.
