TI EVM TMS320F240 and TMS320C50PQ quries

Hi everyone,

I am Ramakrishna.

I have resently started the DSP thats available in our fecility.

before switching to the new family of the DSp I plan to do some home work and base work on the DSPs.

Therefore I am trying to program the TMS320C24x EVM, board. using JTAG.

I am finding certain difficulties in understanding the serial port communication, and also the IN/OUT instruction.

We use the emulator, EMU24xWM.

I also browsed through the net but was not successful.

Please let me know the procedure to fix this issue.

  • I am surprised to know that you found a 24x EVM !!! 24x days are over and shouldn't be used in any new design and certainly should not be used to learn about this product family. Please utilize one of the member of the latest C2000 family of controllers. You can start with Picollo family or any other c280xxx devices. You will have latest tools, peripherals, development environment and most importantly more support for these newer controllers.

  • Hi Arfeen,

    Thank you for your suggestion,

I understand that the EVm that we have at our fecillity is really old enough.

It was not in use at our organization since the date the kit has been purchaced.

There by I dont have any support at the home here.

Now that we have started the DSP and I am the only person involved in the task, I need some input from the people who have worked on this EVM, or related EVM so as to  progress before I get a nw set of device.

So that I donot need much of time in understanding the device, and programing them.

The issue I am having is very general.

It is on the OUT instruction.

That is , I am able to output the data at the address already mapped in the device to the board.

But I am not able to come accross, how to access the I/O port of the board through the out instruction.

I am able to see the program running in the Emulator,

But not able to see the output in the Phyaical world.

I feel there is some address  initialization.

But I am not able to trouble shoot the issue.

    please do help me.

    Thank you

  • You shouldn't work with 24x devices .. if you are serious about DSP then please work with the latest devices ... you will have much better experience with lot quicker positive results. Although I worked with 24x years back unfortunately I don't have the bandwidth to help you on this but if you would like to see how a typical 24x project is setup then try downloading on of these old motor control projects based on 24x devices from here

    Goodluck.

What are you expecting to see?  The OUT instruction causes a write cycle on the external address/data bus, using the I/O strobe.  If you put a scope probe on the I/O strobe pin, you should see a short (around 2 clock period) pulse.  That's about all you will see unless the port to which you are writing is mapped to some other hardware.  You should download the C240 reference manual SPRU161D for more info.  Also, SPRA452 Understanding the External Memory Interface may be helpful.
