TMS320f2810: part status / recommendations for processor upgrade/update

Part Number: TMS320F2810

I have a 3phase motor controller design based on a TMS320F2810 which my company designed years ago. We are looking at a design refresh and are trying to determine if this is still a good part to use. It has been around for quite a while but is still listed as active. Is there any reason not to continue using this part or are there any recommended alternative parts we should consider upgrading too? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Ben,

The F2810 device is still active from TI's perspective and can still be safely designed around, if desired.

However, since it has been awhile, it it likely worth considering an update.  Some questions:

    1. Are you satisfied with the processing power of the F2810?
    2. How much memory utilization are you using on the F2810?
    3. Do you have any features that are in your system that you might like to integrate into the C2000 device?

Understanding only the processor that you are currently using, I might recommend considering the TMS320F2806x or TMS320F2837xS families.  Both families have considerable upgrades to the F281x device that you are using - including upgraded PWM functionality, analog comparators (for fault-tripping PWMs), floating-point units, etc.  The F2837xS has further improvements such as the TMU and on-chip sigma-delta demodulators.

    Thank you,
    Brett
