SMBUS can very well be realized by using I2C bus instead. Why CAN?

There is a new BMS design that only speaks CAN and the main CPU involved has only SMbus so we need to convert between these two interfaces.

Would you have any simple idea that can solve this issue ?

In short you're looking for a controller that can work as a mediator. Talking to BMS through CAN and main CPU through SMbus -> process and exchange data between the two, right?

Exactly, but F280200 doesn't have eCAN peripheral. You can check F2806x series or F280049 instead.

In C2000 we do have CAN but don't have dedicated PMBUS HW. We do have I2C, and it may be possible to implement PMBUS on top of the I2C module. MSP430 devices have a library for this here:

Unfortunately, I don't think MSP has any devices with CAN.

If you wanted the lowest cost C2000 device with CAN, I think that would be in the F2803x family.

Does the host CPU only have CAN HW, or is there some other project specification driving the use of CAN (e.g. for fault detection, electrical characteristics of the CAN bus, etc.)? You could try something like using a 4-bit or 8-bit parallel interface (just GPIO based) to a MSP430, which then translates to PMBUS.

The customer needs SMbus and not PMbus.

The problem is that their MCU (not from TI) does not have a CAN Bus I/F but only SMbus I/F to manage TI BMS devices.

The customer was looking to solve it using one of the low cost C2000 family devices but it seems that we don't have a ready made solution for this combination and there is no previous example how to do it.

Next , they will prpobably go with a CPLD that would do this for them unless we could give them some creative solution.

This is a quite huge business case.

Hi Arik,

Sorry, I misread the desired protocol.  The C2000 I2C isn't going to necessarily be compatible with any arbitrary SMBus implementation, but if the source is also an MCU with some flexibility in the HW configurations, then it is likely you can get them to talk.
