F28M35H52C: Need simple protocol to connect HMI to MCU

We are developing  a controller using the F28M35 microcontroller and need to connect the MCU to an industrial HMI.

The communications options are CAN or RS485 (M3 UART on the MCU). We are interested in just doing basic read/write to the HMI register table. There will be only one (1) device (the HMI) on the CAN or RS485 network.

The HMI we have has CANopen built in but we would need to create the CANopen driver on the MCU side. This is a bit too complicated for our simple application.

Does anybody have any suggestions or can point to some example code we could use to develop this part of our application?
