LAUNCHXL-F28379D: Drivers unavailable for UART

Part Number: LAUNCHXL-F28379D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: C2000WARE

Hello,

I am trying to use the secondary USB connector on my F2837x controlCARD device to communicate over UART with a host computer.

However, connecting the device does not automatically detect the necessary driver in Windows.

Where can I download the appropriate driver to use UART communication?

  • Hi Harsha,

Do you have CCS installed on the target computer? I think this should include the necessary drivers.

    Devin
  • Hello Devin,

Yes, I have CCS installed, and I am able to use the USB communication to program and debug the Delfino card, however when I connect the other USB for UART I am unable to recognize it on my Windows computer. What can I do about this?
  • Hi Harsha,

The next thing you can try is directly installing the FTDI drivers. The FTDI device used on this launchpad is FT2232H. I believe you can get the drivers here: www.ftdichip.com/.../VCP.htm

Once you install these drivers, if you still don't see the virtual COM port, look in your device manager (assuming you are using windows) and see if there are unknown/other devices that appear to be the FTDI chip. In this case you may have to manually force windows to install the drivers.
  • Hello,

I attempted to install the ftdi driver from the webpage you linked, but I still see "No driver found" in the Driver Software Installation window.

How do I force the install, as you mentioned before?
  • Hello,

I am still experiencing difficulties with my Delfino card.

With the USB programmer cable inserted I see "USB Serial Port(COM24)" appear in device manager, so I believe that CCS has installed drivers on my computer. However, when I connect the other USB cable, for serial communication, I do not see any additional com port appear. Running "Scan for Hardware Changes" shows no differences before and after inserting the serial cable.

How do I access the COM port for serial communication with the Delfino control card?
  • Hi Harsha,

I have a Windows 10 laptop that displays the same issue; the com port pops up in the device manager of a Windows 7 PC but not in the device manager of the Windows 10 laptop. I haven't yet found a solution, but I am working on this and haven't forgotten about it.
  • Hello Devin,

    Thank you for the followup.

To add some extra information, I am currently using a Windows 7 desktop where I am seeing this behavior. CCS is installed on this system.

I also tested connecting to a different laptop, again with Windows 7, that did not have CCS installed, and subsequently tried manually installing the FTDI drivers on that computer. In both cases I did not see the Delfino UART show up on that device either.

Please let me know if you find a solution to this issue.
  • Hi Harsha,

On re-reading this thread, it seems like the COM port is working, and you see the virtual port as 'COM24'?

The other USB port on the ControlCard base does not have an FTDI chip and can't be used as a COM port. This should be labeled as "Power Only"?

  • Hello Devin,

    Let me restate my situation:

I have a Delfino Control Card, F2837x R1.3. This is running connected to a Windows 7 host with CCS 7.0 installed.

Previously we had been using the Card while connected to the dock which was included, however, at this point we are not using this, and instead have the Control Card attached to a custom PCB designed for our project.

On the Control Card, there are two USB connectors, one USB-mini, and one USB-micro. The USB-mini I have connected to the Windows 7 computer. When this is connected, power seems to be supplied to the Control Card, and an entry for "COM24" appears in Device Manager. Additionally, when this connection is made, I can use the Debugger in CCS to monitor the Control Card's operation. This connector seems to work properly.

The other USB connector, the USB-mini, has the text "UART" printed next to it on the Control Card's PCB. When I connect this cable, there is no entry which appears in Device Manager. My understanding is that this connector is to be used for serial communication, and my colleague has written an app to communicate with the Control Card using this interface. I need to know how to use the Delfino's UART communication, preferably while still allowing the JTAG debugger in CCS to function.

Please let me know what your recommendation is on how to proceed. This issue has halted our progress for some time now, and we cannot do anything more with this project until I resolve this.

    Thank you,

    Harsha
  • Hi Harsha,

Take a look at the info sheet in C2000Ware in the directory \ti\c2000\C2000Ware_1_00_02_00\boards\controlCARDs\TMDSCNCD28377D. The micro-USB interface is for the USB peripheral on the device while the adjacent switch controls the UART enable to the FTDI chip for the mini USB UART/JTAG connector:

Since this port does not have an FTDI chip, there is no virtual COM port.

Note that there is nothing preventing you from using the virtual COM port on the mini USB interface along with the JTAG emulator at the same time (as long as these are both coming from the same PC).  Once the COM port shows up in the windows device manager, the COM port should function just like a physical COM port from the PC's perspective and as a normal UART via the SCI module on pins GPIO-28 and GPIO-29 from the F2837x device perspective.
