TMS320F28027: Custom Board Debugging

Part Number: TMS320F28027
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EK-TM4C1294XL, TMS320F28069

If i  make my own hardware based on TMS320F280, reffering the C2000 Piccalo Launchpad schematic.I have the C2000 Piccalo Launchpad and it has  XDS100 JTAG debugger. Can i use this debugger for Debugging the code on my Custom Board ? If yes, How it can be done .....

Thanks

Rohit

  • Rohit,

Yes, you can do this. However, it will involve board modifications. You need to gain access to the JTAG signals.

To do this, you will need to remove the Isolator chips: U5 and U7. This will expose pads that are in place for those who wish to disable the ability to do real-time isolated debug on the launchpad. After the Isolators have been removed, you can connect a custom JTAG harness on and access your custom board. I would suggest soldering some SMT jumpers onto the Resistor pads so you are still able to connect to your LP without hard modifications again in the future.

    Does this make sense?

  • Hi Mark ,

    Thanks for your reply !!!

Instead of doing modifications on Piccolo c2000 Launchpad, I have the other launchpad such as ( TM4C1294XL and TM4C123). These two board also has on board debugger (xds110) can i use this for Debugging purpose ?
  • Rohit,

It does not look like these boards have the ability to be used to debug other boards. They do have the on-board debugger to facilitate simple connections to the LaunchPad without external hardware. The EK-TM4C1294XL has the ability to have an external debugger plugged in to debug the LaunchPad but not the other way around.

There are a few other LaunchPads now that do actually provide the functionality you are looking for:

www.ti.com/.../msp-exp430fr2311 (very simple and cheap) or really any of the new SimpleLink LaunchPads have the ability to use the on-board debugger in order to debug and external system. Check out www.ti.com/launchpad for a full list of available LaunchPads.

    Thanks,
    Mark
  • Hi Mark,

I'm trying to debugg the code on my custom board (TMS320F28069PFPQ).As per you mentioned i removed the isolators i.e U5,U6 from LP(c2000) and i connected the JTAG lines to my board(TMS,TCK,TDO,TRST,3V3 and GND) but its showing error. When i do the the jtag test connection its showing jtag connection is failed.

    Thanks
    Rohit
  • Hi ,

I have removed the U5,U6 from LP (c2000) and i have connected the jtag lines(TMS,TCK,TDO,TDI,3V3 and GND) to custom h/w based on TMS320F28069.I have attached picture, but still im getting an error...! any other modification needs to be done ?

    Error connecting to the target:

    (Error -1135 @ 0x0)

The debug probe reported an error. Confirm debug probe configuration and connections, reset the debug probe, and retry the operation.

    (Emulation package 6.0.576.0)

any ideas on how to solve it?

  • Rohit,

It appears that you have connected the wrong side of those pads to your board. You have connected the JTAG signals of the F28027F to the JTAG pins of your board. Switch the pad that you are soldered to in order to connect the JTAG signals from the XDS100 to your board.

    Does this make sense?

    Thanks,
    Mark
  • Thanks mark ....

    Finally its working :)
