LAUNCHXL-F28379D: Power Supply Requirement

Hi everyone,

We are designing a three phase inverter for which we will implement the control through the LAUNCHXL-F28379D. The power supply that is available to us is 12 V. So, for the launchpad, we need 3.3 V or 5 V supply. We need to use a dc/dc regulated converter for it. But, by our searching, we are not finding the power requirement for the launchpad in the website or datasheet. May be, we are missing it. 

Would anyone like to provide the power requirement for the launchpad-F28379D ?

    You are correct that the LaunchPad requires a 3.3V supply, and 5V if needed (this can be generated from the 3.3V on the board)

    We do not document the power requirements of the entire board. As this is a development kit, we cannot know all of the applications that it could be used in. The power consumption of the F28379D is documented in the Datasheet: www.ti.com/.../specifications

    I suggest testing your application using a bench power supply and characterizing the board consumption across various loads. The main driver of the consumption on this board will be the Delfino itself. You can look at the current ratings of the other devices as well. I will note that the power supplied by the USB (500mA @ 5V) is overkill for the standalone board requirements.

    Thank you for your reply, we are in the initial design, we are just approximating the power consumption. We are thinking to give 5 V supply to the Launchpad. So,for selecting the dc/dc converter, we want to know the approximate current requirement for the entire board. We know that it will depend on the load, but we just want to know the maximum current rating so that we can select the dc/dc converter. Is 500 mA is enough for the board? Or for safe margin, 1 A will be more than enough?

    It is difficult to say. The F28379D can consume up to ~825mW alone. I do not have the breakdown of the max consumption of the remaining components of the board. That max number is at 125C and max voltages, you will likely see less, especially on the EVM as it is not rate to reach those temperatures and should not be pushed.

    500mA to at 3.3V should be plenty for the device alone. Again, you will need to look at what else will be powered by the 3.3V supply and determine if that is sufficient.
