TMS320F28075: Long Term Availability

Part Number: TMS320F28075

Hi,

In a new design we are planning to use TMS320F28075 microcontroller. The project is a long one and we are worried about long term availability of TMS320F28075. We need the part to be available for at least 5 years.

I search the internet but could not find data on how long the microcontroller will be available. Could you please provide information on TMS320F28075 lifetime data and long term availability?

Thanks for your help.

Sahi

  • Sahi,

The F2807x series is very new from C2000, just starting production in the last 2 years.  We are still shipping in increasing volumes from the first F28x series that started production in 2003. These series run for extremely long periods of time for industrial and automotive applications.

  • That is a question I ask many manufacturers before. I work for a company that has the reputation of that make products that last way longer then 10 year. They will not tell/can you how long a product last. TI needs to make money on it.
Ask your local representative if some big manufacture use that product. So you can lift on there production numbers. Or use more than 100k a year. then sometimes doors will open.

    Alternatives:
Linear has the reputation never make parts obsolete.
ST has on some products a 10 year production Guarantee.
  • evs,

since you know our C2000 products well, you know they ship for many, many years.

LF240x started shipping in 2000, and was made NRND a couple years ago (but still ships)

F281x started production in 2003 with no plans for NRND

Piccolo products started production in 2006-2009 time frame and will continue to increase in volume for years and years.

So, our intention is to ship them for a very long time.  Do we legally guarantee we will do so? No, we won't accept the liability for "Acts of God" that would cause us to shift plans. We also don't guarantee that there won't be a lack of interest in a specific device series that would cause us to halt production (though we have never done so).

I'll also point out that we often release MANY orderable part numbers (different configurations / packages / temperatures) with each device family. In reality only a % of these (usually less than 50%) end up driving the vast majority of the volume.  So after some time you will see specific orderable part numbers that are retired (due to lack of demand), but we will continue to ship the other popular configurations.

  • Chris,

I don't want to start a flame war. I'm still using the C2000 series so I expect it will be produced for a long time. But then again. TI is an American stock listed company and they needs to make there shareholders happy. So If they board decided differently, I don't think they are consulting you about it.

In the past it happens to me. I got reassured by a sales person that that product will be produced for a long time. And a year later I got a end of life notification.

I really likes, and probably many others, a officially statement from TI what there position is about long availability.
The products I'm making, I expect they have a production life time of at least of 10 year. We are still selling new products with EPROMs in them. We have customers that have a running machines purchased somewhere in the 1980's
Not all markets are that fast as the consumer marked with high volumes and big design teams. Many markets are small with no willingness for change. And they can't afford a new design every so much years.
  • TI's official policy is here

In your case, I know which devices you got "burned on".  The difference is that those devices had barely started production and there were some extenuating circumstances on their continued manufacturability.

C2000 devices have been manufactured for over 20 years....we have more device series / chip designs than I can even remember...the point being that this is family of devices with a huge installed base of thousands of customers in industrial and automotive markets. The products run for a long time and they are being used by thousands of customers with similar expectations.
