TMS320F28069: Vector Control solution for stepping motor

Part Number: TMS320F28069
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8880, CONTROLSUITE, DESIGNDRIVE

Hi all,

My customers are considering turning stepping motors with high efficiency.

Is there a C2000 solution for rotating the stepping motor with vector control as shown below?

Or similar to it.

https://www.renesas.com/en-us/promotions/solutions/event/devcon2017/sf-06b.html

Currently customers are using open loop control with C2000 and DRV8880,

but they are troubled because of the large current value at low speed in this method.

Best regards,

Sasaki

  • You can find a stepper motor control example as below directory in C2000 controlSUITE if you downloaded and installed it. The example implement microstepping and current close loop control for a bi-polar stepper motor with dual full bridge inverter. This can help to solve the large current on low speed and high vibration on high speed. Your customer can refer to this example to improve performance.

  • Hi Yanming-san,

    Thank you for your support!
I think that it can be realized by monitoring BEMF based on this program and controlling Iref.
    I will think about it.

    Sasaki
  • By the way, is there an example program that monitors BEMF and controls Iref?
  • Sasaki,
We have used InstaSPIN-FOC on 3-ph steppers, but it can't be used on standard 2/4/8-phase. This is controlling the stepper in velocity mode, not position/step mode, and there is not pure control at zero speed of course. So a different use case than most stepper motors.

Other than that we have only done standard step / microstepping and to be honest a C2000 class device is not really required to do standard stepper control. We usually recommend customers look at our DRV87x integrated stepper drivers.
  • Hi Chris-san,

    Thank you for your information.

By the way, are you planning to release 2-ph stepper demo software using InstaSPIN-FOC or MOTION?
My customer wants to drive the motor with the following specifications.
    - Using F28069M
    - Field oriented control
    - 2-ph stepper
    - Speed control and position control with incremental encoder

If SW is not released, are there any advice for realizing that?

    Best regards,
    Sasaki
  • Sasaki,

We are not planning to release ANY Stepper control related example projects. InstaSPIN, DesignDRIVE, or any other. Steppers just aren't a focus for us.

  • Hi Chris-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    I got it.

    Best regards,
