TMDSHVMTRINSPIN: Short across phases (Need Repair)

Part Number: TMDSHVMTRINSPIN

Have accidentally briefly shorted across the motor phases while operating a motor. System shut down and when I replaced fuse and plugged it in, there was a spark that tripped the breaker in my shop.  There is no visual of any component that looks fried or damaged in any way, but something is clearly wrong. I've checked resistance across the three R020 Resistors by the phase outputs and they appear to be damaged (assume these are shunt resistors). Two of them provide a resistance of about 34 ohms, while one is 0.2 ohms (I did not take them out of the circuit).  I'm thinking that simply replacing them might be the fix but worried there is other things I need to be aware of and fix as well so I don't cause even greater damage.

Any support or guidance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards............Jonathan

  • You may check R39/R10/R11 first to look if these resistors are shorted or broken, and you have to check the power module of inverter (U1/PS21765) to look if the 3 half bridges were shorted or broken. You can use a digital multi-meter to test diodes between P/N and U/V/W. If these components were damaged, you have to replace them with a new one.

  • Thank you for your reply. It looks like I need to purchase and replace the U1/PS21765 power module. I've looked all over the TI site and I'm unable to find where I can purchase it.

If you could provide some direction it would be much appreciated.
  • This power module is not a device of TI, you may find the part # on Digital-Key or Mouser to order it.
  • Hi Yanming... I really appreciate your help and as you suggested I checked all the components. I replaced all that seemed to be compromised, including the U1/PS21765 Power Module and the three R020 shunt resistors by the phase outputs.
After all the components were replaced I started up the kit and it seemed to be all good again. That said, when I went to let the system identify the motor again it started out just fine making the familiar loud humming noise before it starts to turn the motor. Rather than turning the motor as part of the identification process (as it has done in the past) it just shakes back and forth in the same spot and doesn't turn. It's very loud and I shut it down as I'm worried it's going to cause some damage after I just fixed it. Do you have any ideas on what it might be that is till wrong? Any suggestions or help you might offer would be very much appreciated. Thank you....
  • You may back lab01b to run the motor using open loop control to check the signal chain of voltage/current sampling. The motor should run smoothly if the power module is good and set right voltage/frequency for open loop running. Follow the lab guide to check the voltage/current sampling signal using datalog or pwmdac function. Make sure all 3 shunt resistors (R39/R10/R11) are fine, and check the pwm output first without connecting ac power supply and motor in lab01b.
