TMS320F28335: Picolo vs Defino

Part Number: TMS320F28335
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28379D, TMDSDOCK28379D

Dear C2000 expert,

I'm trying to select one of C2000 family device for my inverter product, and the switch frequency will reach to 100Khz, do you have some recommendation?

Can you please provide a detail device comparison of picolo and defino? What I want know is F28035, F28069, F280045, and F28335. That would be best if TI have already done this comparison. Thanks...

  • Hi Jack,

You can checkout the comparison chart here:

  • Gautam,

Thanks for your support. It's about F28027F/F28069/F28379 comparison. But there is no F280045, F28035, F28335, can you please help on this?

BTW, what your recommendation if the switch frequency of inverter requires 100Khz?
  • Hi Jack,

For 100KHhz switching, you can very well use devices ranging from F28027 to F28335 but depends on the amount of computational power you're looking for in your application. If you've complex algorithms and floating point computations where you require more RAM and Flash, I would recommend F28069 or F28335. There have been scenarios where I started with F28335 and ended up using F28027 in one of my application. Once you get an idea wrt your application things would get simpler.
If you directly want to select the part, F28069 would be great as it has FPU and CLA. Let me know if you've any further doubts.

    Regards,
    Gautam
  • Gautam,

Thanks. How about 28004x? I found that it's performance better than 28069.
  • For those 3 devices, F28069, F280049, and F28335, which device is the most highly recommend for 100Khz inverter? Please share your comments.

    Thanks...

Yes, it is better than F28069.

    F28335 anytime!

  • Gautam,

Thanks. But there is no analog comparator within 28335, so fast OCP, CBC, and OVP won't be able to protected.

    Dear TI C2000 expert,

May I have your comment about this question?

  • Hi Jack,

As Gautam suggested, the switching frequency is not really as important as a lot of other specifications you might also have in your system.  For example, what is your control loop frequency (is it the same as the switching frequency or slower)?

For most inverters and in situation where you won't have any C2000 code-base within your company, I would probably recommend starting with the F28004x family or F2837x family.  Both are recent and have a lot of features that you may find helpful in your application (TMU, sigma-delta demodulators, analog comparators, etc).

The F2806x is also not a bad choice - especially if you have expertise with the F2802x/03x/05x families.  The differences between them are quite minimal.

Many of the links within that section will provide more good, recommended information.

  • Brett,

Yes, the current loop, clark, park, and iclark, ipark are the same frequency with switch frequency. What my concern is that weather the CPU could be have the bandwidth to handle all those tasks within each cycle.
  • Hi Jack,

Then I would recommend starting with the F2837x family of devices.  The F2837xS or F2837xD are both good options, and there are a lot of similarities.

For evaluation, you could utilize the F28379D LaunchPad (LAUNCHXL-F28379D) or F28379D Experimenter's Kit (TMDSDOCK28379D).  Porting between F2837xS & F2837xD is a relatively easy task should you want to move to the xS.

F28004x is also an option, but I think I'd begin with the F2837x.

    Thank you,
    Brett
