InstaSPIN-FOC for 2-phase Bipolar Stepper Motors

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

I have a project using 2-phase bipolar stepper motors and am interested in using field oriented control.  Does InstaSPIN-FOC support 2-phase bipolar stepper motors?

mentions that support for stepper motors is being considered for the future.  Since it is dated September 15, 2015, I was wondering what is the current state for stepper motor support by InstaSPIN-FOC?

Thanks,

Joseph

  • InstaSPIN-FOC didn't support 2-phase stepper motor directly till now. The 2-phase stepper must be configured and control ed as a 3-phase motor if you want to use instaSPIN-FOC for it.

Maybe, you could refer to the 2-stepper example project in below folder if you installed C2000 controlSUITE, which can be downloaded from TI website as below.

  • Yanming, thank you for the information. Allow me to rephrase your reply to make sure I understood it correctly.

InstaSPIN-FOC does not directly support 2-phase stepper motors as of today (May 30, 2018).  There might be support for it in the future. Is that correct?

You also mentioned being able to use a InstaSPIN-FOC with a 2-phase stepper motor by configuring and controlling it as a 3-phase motor. Nicholas Oborny said that TI might have investigated using InstaSPIN-FOC with bipolar stepper motors but ran into issues here: e2e.ti.com/.../1374357 Is that true and do you have any details about the issues that were run into? I am concerned I will run into the same issues and either may not be able to and/or have the bandwidth to resolve them.

    Best Regards,
    Joseph
