TMS320F2806: hvkit_rev1p1 kit for a bldc motor

Part Number: TMS320F2806

Hello,

We are having an issue with the high voltage Instaspin kit we are using to control our BLDC motor. We are using the original GUI for TMS320F28069 to spin the motor. The problem is that we are not able to get the maximum torque we need at start up. We tried both torque mode and "torque+speed" mode but the maximum starting torque we are getting is about 1.2 NM when we set the torque reference to 1 pu which is not able to spin our load. ( we have no problem at no load) The motor is designed to deliver higher starting torques. Currently, we are using the .out file provided by TI for TMS320F28069 GUI composer. Any suggestions how we could get higher torque? This is URGENT so we highly appreciate your quick response. Thanks!

  • What example project is your reference? It's sensored or sensorless? Would you like to provide more information at rated power, rated torque, the target speed for startup, and some waveforms during the startup with a heavy load?
You might try an open loop/force angle for startup if you are using sensorless control since a precise rotor position is difficult to get during zero/very low speed.
  • We started with the original code programmed to the micro and ran the GUI without making any changes. I think it should be the appProgram.out file in this folder ( C:\ti\guicomposer\webapps\InstaSPIN_FOC_F2806xM ) and started playing with the GUI. For now, we are doing sensorless. We are using this controller for a fan where we need high torque and low rpm (60-600 rpm). We need to have at least 5 NM torque to start sniping the fan . The power won't exceed 600W. I have the following questions:

1- What sample project has been used to generate the .out file with the eval kits?
2- What sample project can we use for both sensorless and sensor modes?
3- How can we try an open loop? What sample project should we use?
4- How can we increase the generated starting toque on the driver?

Thanks for your urgent response in advance.
  • Yanming, any suggestions/comments? We've got stuck and can't move forward with this controller. Can you please answer the questions above? We cannot start the motor without initial help. Also, when the motor starts spinning, we cannot go above 200 rpm. Any comments?

  • Please refer to instaSPIN lab guide, you may use lab02b or lab02c to identify the correct motor parameters, and set them in user.h, and set enough maximum current based on your motor specification. You could have a check on the output of speed and current PI regulator, to look if the torque current or input voltage is not enough for high speed.

For a startup with a heavy load, you might have a look at chapter 14 of InstaSPIN user's guide (SPRUHJ1G), to enable stator Rs recalibration or enable force angle.

  • If we use this GUI ( C:\ti\guicomposer\webapps\InstaSPIN_FOC_F2806xM )

Can we create the .out file using CCS and rename it to appProgram.out file or it only supports the appProgram.out which is included with the original installation?

What about the universal GUI? if we want to use the UNIVERSAL GUI ( C:\ti\guicomposer\webapps\InstaSPIN_F2806xM_UNIVERSAL) ,Can we copy .out to this location and rename it to appProgram.out and  run the .exe file?

  • Yes, both GUIs can support yourself target file if you rename the target file to appProgram.ou. Please refer to the GUI guide, the major variables for GUI in your project should be kept without changing the definition in the gMotorVars struct, if not, maybe some variables can't be displayed correctly in GUI.
  • where can we find the original source code associated with the appProgram.out which is included with the original installation? IS it generated by one of the example projects? If so, which one is it?
  • You might use one lab project based your requirement to generate the target file (proj_xxx.out) using CCS, like lab02b for identification, lab05b or lab10a for speed close control. And then copy the target file to the folder (\guicomposer\webapps\InstaSPIN_FOC_F2806xM) of GUI Composer, change its name to appProgram .out.
