TMS320F28379D: Interfacing 4 quadrature encoders

Dear TI Forum,

I want to use the TMS320F28379D to control 4 motors with quadrature encoders. As the TMS320F28379D just has 3 eQEP modules, I am looking for an eQEP alternative.

Could somebody please suggest a solution? It can be an external part or made up of modules from the TMS320F28379D.

Is there a solution using the eCAP modules?

Hi David,

eCAP will not be able to count the pulses and direction that eQEP can do. eCAP can be used to measure the period of pulse, or duty cycle etc. You can read through the TRM for more details on eCAP.

I am not aware of any part with 4 eQEP modules, only other option that I can think of is to use 2 TMS320F28379D micro controllers.

Thats what I want to avoid. If there is no possibility I will go for a small Piccolo, as a small footprint is of great importance.

Thanks for the answers.
The only ICs I could find for that purpose come from iC-Haus and the LS7083/4 chip, but they are all nearly as big, or bigger than a Piccolo from TI.
