There are several DELAY_US uses in the code. Which are you replacing? I expect most to not be able to be replaced.
Additionally, the HAL uses timer0, so make sure you aren't somehow conflicting with that.
I doubt that enabling global interrupts is the issue, since they get enabled as part of the ethercat driver initialization.

Perhaps I was not clear, I am not looking to modify ethercat Hal's generic code. In my application, I want to implement timer interrupts in order to read data from a sensor in specific time intervals. I have succeeded without ethercat and now I am looking to add ethercat functionality to my project.
With DELAY_US everything works fine, but halts CPU for a fair amount of time without any actual reason.
I will see if there is any interference with ethercat's Hal and I'll keep you posted.

Alright, I don't see an issue with what you are trying to do. Do your evaluation and provide details if you run into a problem that you need assistance with.
