TMDSHVMTRINSPIN max Vout?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDSHVMTRINSPIN, MOTORWARE

Hi there,

I bought a while ago from Texas Instrument an High Voltage Motor Control Kit with InstaSPIN-FOC and InstaSPIN-MOTION enabled Piccolo MCU  TMDSHVMTRINSPIN (ACTIVE) and I would like to know what is the maximum voltage and frequency which this controller can output!?. I am using it to spin an PMSM  from washing machine and I need over 1000V @ 3 phase and 1200Hz. Also were I can change the output voltage of this controller?I was reading the  instructions but I don't fully understand them. Thank you

  • The engineer supporting this is on vacation and may return back in a few weeks. Pls anticipate delays, thanks for your patience.
  • The maximum output voltage of the HV kit is about 220Vrms line to line excepting the voltage drop on power switches and dead-time effect at the AC 220V input condition.
You don't need a inverter that can output over 1000V in washing machine. You can run the motor up to 1200Hz in spin-dry mode with flux-weakening control method that can make an induced EMF to constant value. In this control mode, the Back-EMF will not be proportional to the speed and will not be increased with the increased speed.
But you need to check how much flux-weakening current(id) is needed at the maximum speed because the maximum output current of the EVM is 9Apeak.
You can do some flux-weakening test with lab09 project after downloading MotorWare (www.ti.com/.../MOTORWARE)
  • I have done it that way, using the flux-weakening control, but the torque of the motor is decreasing rapidly and I don't want that. I need to spin this motor @3000RMP with it's full torque and for that I need a 3 phase controller with an output of 1200Hz and 1325 V 5Amp max, square wave signal. Do you have for sale such a controller? or do you think that it is possible to built such a controller? This type of motor runs on radio frequency, with very high volt and very low amp. Thank you.
  • The motor you mentioned is very common in direct driven washing machine. I believe the motor type is SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor).

If so, TMDSHVMTRINSPIN plus InstaSPIN-FOC solution can drive this motor. But if you are not good at motor control, it’s not easy to spin up to max speed because you have to tune the flux-weakening gain or modify it with PI control type. Also, you might need multiple speed gains according to speed range. Anyway, TI’s InstaSPIN-FOC solution is a good choice for washing machine, but you might face a lot of challenges on start-up at high load condition and spin-mode for dryer.

I don’t think you can work out well all problems by this e2e. I strongly recommend that you contact to local TI FAE on your site.

  • Hi Dan,

We Just wanted to check in and see if there is any update from your side, we haven’t heard from you for a week, so we are assuming you were able to resolve your issue. Please let me know if you have any questions. We would like to close this thread if no any further questions. Thanks.
