CCS/TMS320F280049C: How to get the accurate device junction temperature?

Part Number: TMS320F280049C

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Dear collogues,

because of the harsh application environment, I want to measure the device junction temperature to provide a protection for F280049,

but the accuracy of internal temperature sensor is bad(type +-15 degree),

How can I increase a few cost to implement to get the accurate junction temperature(+- 2 degree)?

 thanks!

  • Hi jjl3,

To achieve that level of accuracy, you'll need to get an external temperature sensor, possibly something that you can glue/tape directly to the device package.

If you want to better estimate the device junction temperature from the package temperature you'll need to (in increasing order of accuracy) use the typical power numbers from the datasheet, or measure the average power in your system, or measure the instantaneous current draw on both device rails in the application and dynamically calculate the power. Once you have this power number, you can use the thermal equations in the datasheet (see "Thermal Resistance Characteristics
") to estimate junction temperature from the temperature at the top of the device package.
