TMS320F 28069 based launchpad + DRV8301 based bundle. Launch pad microcontroller Ic got over heated and stopped working.

Part Number: Launch-XL

Dear Sir,

I have been using this launch pad XL with DRV 8301 boards almost 2 months to develop my application.

Yesterday suddenly, the chip got overheated up and started giving trouble. And atlast all the LED s are shut off. Iniitally i checked only with the board by powering through USB cable suspecting the USB powering strength..

Afterwards, I used drv 8301 where there is a DC supply powering the base board. There also similar response.

IT was a new board.  felt very bad for loosing the board. Hence wanted to replace the microcontroller IC and give life to the board; But surprisingly , the chip present  was TMS 320F 28069 MPZT for which the part number shows the temperature grade as (0, 0 ) what it means?  IS it not above industrial grade ? is it commercial grade? Why it should go bad?

I have placed an order to buy the chip and replace. But you clarify me the grade of temperature of the IC? and also assure me will it work??

And pl indicate what are the extra care ti be taken in order not to loose the chips in future.

Your quick reply will enable us to replace and give life and continue my project.

Thanking you

REgards,

Sundari

  • Sundari,

The "T" in TMS320F28069MPZT means this device is rated for operation from -40'C to 105'C. This is clearly explained in both the datasheet and errata. I don’t understand what you mean by " for which the part number shows the temperature grade as (0, 0 ) ". Where did you see this information?

The problem you are having has nothing to do with "industrial grade" or "commercial grade". Your device likely suffered "Electrostatic Discharge" (ESD) or Electrical Overstress (EOS) damage. Former happens when ESD handling precautions are not taken while handling the device. Latter happens when VIL/VIH, IOL/IOH specs of the device are not met.
