TMS320F28388D: Main difference between '388D' and '076'

Part Number: TMS320F28388D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28076

Hi All,

My customer is going to design a DCDC converter for the motion control of big DC motors.

Here customer would like to use TMS320F28388D because of these advantages:

  • Ethernet interface, so no need for external MSP432E
  • Possibility to work both as single core and dual core

Please find below some customer questions:

  •  Main Differences with TMS320F28076 for motion control?
  •  SW Migration from ‘076’ to ‘388D’?
  •  HW compatibility between ‘076’ to ‘388D’?
  •  Samples? RTM? Possibility to use only the single core version?

Many Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,

F28388D architecture is derived from F28076 device family but there are many enhancement as well as new feature added to this device. Please refer "Table 3-1. Device Comparison" in F28388D device manual for list of features.  Please note that F28076 device is available in 176 and 100 pin package where as F28388D is available only in 337 pin package. There is plan to have 176 pin package in future but it is not available now.

Please see below the response to your queries -

Main Differences with TMS320F28076 for motion control?

All existing feature on F28076 with respect to motor control application are available on this device. We have additional IPs (like EtherCAT, EtherNet, PMBus, FSI) for communication and also more PWM channels. Please note that some of the interface like EtherNet are only available on communication manager (CM) and not on C28x (control side).

SW Migration from ‘076’ to ‘388D’?

We have enhanced some logic (e.g. PWM synch scheme, security scheme) so user may have to make some modification to existing code. We do not have migration guide for this device yet but if you have list of the IPs used in customer application, we can provide further detail.

HW compatibility between ‘076’ to ‘388D’?

This is pin compatible to other device but different package (mentioned above).

Samples? RTM? Possibility to use only the single core version?

337 pin package samples are available. RTM is planned in 2Q 2020. Yes, single core version (CPU1 + CM) will be available in future. For now customer can use dual core device as single core for development.

Please let us know if you have any further queries on this.

    Regards,

    Vivek Singh
