CCS/TMS320F28335: DSP core supply damaged when I program .out file using File-> load program.

Part Number: TMS320F28335
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: C2000WARE, TMDSCNCD28335

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I'm testing TMS320F28335 based design. It works fine when I program internal flash. No problems are observed.

However for one particular test, it has to be programmed through File->load program option.

First time it is OK, even though it is consuming more current than when I program internal flash.

I'm powering 3.3V externally and 1.8V for core is derived from 3.3V using TPS62305DRC. Is it because of supply transients overshoots it is getting damaged ?

I have observed 2 DSP board and 2 programmer (C2000 series) getting damaged in exact same manner.  I can share schematic and .out file privately.

I don't want to try out exact same process for new board without root cause identification.

Appreciate your support as always.

  • Hi Rahul,

How are you programming the F28335 device? i.e. over JTAG (using CCS?), serial, etc.

Do you mean performing this sequence within CCS? How is this process different than what you have working?

Are you using a stable power source? The supply voltage for the flash has to be present and stable during programming.

What sort of damage are you witnessing? Are you not able to connect to the F28335 device after this programming issue occurs?

    Best,

    Kevin

  • Hello Kevin,

I forgot to mention few details.

    I'm programming F28335 using C2000 XDS510LC JTAG programmer. I'm using CCS3.3.

Yes, I'm using stable power source. Programming is successful. And it works in intended way for some time (2~3 power cycles).

Damage witnessed: 1.8V VDD core supply is consuming very high current (450mA) and showing short circuit using DMM.  And I'm unable to connect to target now.

Same issue is observed in two boards till now.

Previously I was programming internal flash and everything was OK.

This was on the same first board which later damaged when programmed using File->load program.

    THanks.

  • Hi Rahul,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

Can you check the connection between your JTAG header and the F28335 in your schematic? Compare to what is provided in section 5.9.5 "Emulator Connection Without Signal Buffering for the DSP" in the datasheet:

    http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tms320f28335.pdf

Check that your pulldown resistors are on the correct signals and that the values are correct.

Is this damage witnessed only after programming using your XDS510? Once programmed and running the F28335 stays in good, working condition?

The JTAG Connectivity Debug App Report would be good to reference and may help you pin point what's wrong. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/spracf0/spracf0.pdf

  • Hi Rahul,

Any update from you on this issue? Please let me know if you need any additional support from our side or if you have resolved this issue.

    Best,

    Kevin

  • Hello Kevin,

Issue is not resolved yet but we have resoldered new DSP chips on our board and started working.

We are no more using File -> load program method. We are programming flash memory of DSP chip now. And it is working OK.

JTAG connections are OK. We are suspecting some overcurrent due to storing code in RAM.

    Regards,

    Rahul.

  • Hi Rahul,

    OK, thanks for the update.

What programming method are you using now if not using CCS? Is it still over JTAG? Just curious how the programming process being used now is different.

Comparing your schematic to the F28335 ControlCard design may give some idea of the issue if it is hardware related. The ControlCard schematic can be found in C2000ware at the below directory:

    C:\ti\c2000\C2000Ware_2_00_00_03\boards\controlCARDs\TMDSCNCD28335\F28335controlCARD_HWDevPkg_ZJZ [R2.2]

You're using the TPS62305DRC device for the device's VDD correct? What voltage have you configured the device for? May be worth submitting a question to the Power Management forum about the device configuration / operation.
