TMS320F28388D: On chip RAM size

Hello,

TMS320C28346 MCU has one core and dedicated internal RAM of 516KB. But newer one TMS320F28388D contains 44KB dedicated RAM for each two cores and 128KB shared memory. What is the target market & application of TMS320F28388D MCU? I am worried about the this "low" internal memory size for some real-time control application.

Hi,

TMS320C28346 is RAM based device where as F28388 is flash based device. On F28388 along with RAM we have 512KB of Flash memory on each subsystem (total 1.5MB) which is used for code.

For that reason, F28388 is operating at 200MHz which is slower than operating frequency of TMS320C28346 (300 MHz )? I think that F28388' s 1.5MB internal Flash is slower than the RAM, right?

You are right. Flash is wait state memory but it also has pre-fetch mechanism so for linear code it'll be just like 0-waitsate RAM access.

So, what do you think about the F28388' s performance in real-time control application with respect to the C28346? Does F28388' s low RAM size reduce the cycle time of the real-time control application?

Hi please note that total MIPS available on this device is much higher (dual C28x + CM) compare to C28346 hence it can run multiple thread same time. Many non-critical task can be off loaded to CPU2 and CM can take care of communication hence user may get better performance but again it'll depend on the application.
