Please open a schematic in the c2000ware:

The revision history on the cover page tells:

Then, could you please advise if the diode, D2, is mandatory or 'nice to have' ?

I read the DS abs max ratings and errata but no findings about the necessity or power-up sequence info.

I'm sorry, let me cancel my question.

In the DS "Power Sequencing" explained this.

>> "The voltage on VDDIO should be greater than VDD or no less than 0.3 V below VDD at all times."

OK, glad you resolved it - if you have some other method (than the Schottky diode) to ensure this power sequencing - that is fine too, but this power sequencing requirement is mandatory.
