TMS320F280049: how to understand Open Drain Output Mode for GPIO?

As for GPxODR register, it said that in open-drain mode, writing a 1 to the output data will tri-state the output buffer. How to understand "tri-state"? Does it mean high-impedance state? I am not sure what kind of application needs this usage.
