TMDSCNCD28388D: what is the intention of the eeprom IC on the controlBoard and why it is related to ethercat (ethercat eeprom)

Part Number: TMDSCNCD28388D

Hi, what is the real intention of the eeprom IC on the controlBoard? and why it's related to Ethercat? is it something related to the applications or it's a hardware requeriment to the internal network communication uC cortex M4 for the ethercat to work.

I mean, is it a must or an option.?

May I use another memory technology, or the internal flash of the uC directly?

Thanks in advance. Pablo
