INSTASPINFOCMOTORWAREGUI: FAST observer at zero speeds

Part Number: INSTASPINFOCMOTORWAREGUI

Dear TI team,

I read this statement in one of TI's videos explaining FOC :

The FAST observer can't operate all the way down to zero speed. That means it'll never be able to replace an encoder or another shaft sensor in a position server application.

, but at the beginning of the video, it says FAST replaces the shaft sensors..

I am a bit confused. What do you mean by server application? So FOC FAST replaces shunt sensors and encoders or not? As I understood FAST replaces traditional SMO ?

Please correct my infos.

Thank you

  • As you mentioned above, the InstaSPIN is also a sensorless estimator algorithm that's very difficult to run a motor under zero/very low speed, it is just used to spin the motor without position sensor at a speed range as other sensorless algorithms, like SMO... It can't fully replace a position sensor for servo applications if it needs a zero-speed operation.
