If you're thinking of implementing a differential driver/receiver like RS-422, RS-485, LVDS, etc. then it will depend on the drive strength of the differential driver. I believe most driver datasheets will include supported Mbps supported at certain distances.
LVDS, might be your best bet if you're trying for 40 Mbps throughput.
