28335 eqep zero speed criteria

Hi,

I wonder what is the best solution to judge if the motor is at zero speed? There are two aspects of it: 1, when the motor stops; 2, when the motor starts. I am using the capture unit in the timer for low speed calculation (clock*scaler/latched period) on a polling base. can i get better result by using any interrupt? given the fact that the encoder I have only has two lines A and B, there is no index bit.

Thanks

  • hmmmm....one of the applications where this is a requirement is "crane" applications. When the mechanical brake is keeping the load hanging ...drive must detect if the load is slipping or not .. any slip in load may come from brake failure and in that case drive must take up the load to prevent uncontrolled fall. This detection is done with QEP type module where quadrature pulses can be counted to detect maximum allowed slip before drive must react.

So, coming to your question ... I believe using encoder will give you best indication whether or not a drive is at zero speed. I think encoder will also work better at low speed ...
