LAUNCHXL-F28379D: Launchpad burnt out

Hi,

I'm working with the LaunchpadXL-F28379D. I've recently purchased three of these boards, but two of these boards are already burnt out.

The boards worked perfectly at the start, but now two of them are defect. One of the defect boards was running perfectly for some hours, but after being on for a couple more hours it burnt out. The over-current fuse is triggerd, but before that, the TMS320F28379D chip gets too hot to touch and the board is not responsive to the usb interface (obviously).

What could cause this issue, and is this warrenty related?

I've been testing this chip for implementation in a motor controller, but this does not seem like a good start...

  • Update:

    After quickly connecting and disconnecting the usb-supply by means of a last effort using a wall adapter, one of the boards started working again. It does not get hot anymore, and I'm able to program the board once again. After a few minutes the problem reappeared:

    Blue led turns off, and spot in corner of chip gets hot:

    In some cases, the blue led turns on for some time again and the marked area cools down, but as soon as the blue led turns off(indicating that the program has stopped) this area heats up again.

    Are the boards connected to any external power-electronics circuitry? It is possible that the I/O pins of the board are loaded beyond their rated capability. This device (and the LaunchPAD) have been in production for a few years now, with no known issues (except as stated in the device errata). 

    This board contains sensitive electronics that are easily damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)/Electrical Overstress (EOS). Such damages are not covered under warranty and your only recourse may be to buy a new board. It is extremely important that these boards are handled in a ESD controlled environment, following all industry-standard ESD handling precautions. For EOS, it is very important not to exceed the VIH, VIL and IOH values quoted in the datasheet. 

    Warranty typically covers manufacturing defects only. In any case, please work with your TI Field Applications Engineer (FAE) or Technical Sales Representative (TSR) to explore your options.
