TMS570LC4357: Why XDS560v2 Pro is so noisy in operation?

Part Number: TMS570LC4357
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDX570LC43HDK, LAUNCHXL2-570LC43

Dear all,

We have bought the XDS560v2 pro for debugging/tracing on TMS570LC43xx HDK. However, the fan inside the tracing box is producing a lot of noise. Honestly, it is very annoying.

It would be of great help, if any TI engineer can confirm about this issue and suggest a solution.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Farrukh

  • Farrukh,

I have never made a measurement, but the noise does not annoy me - I have a very old unit, though.

That said, the fan is somewhat small (I think 60mm x 60mm, but I need to confirm tomorrow) and runs quite fast - a high pitch noise is usual in this scenario.

At any rate, I will check with Spectrum Digital and see if there were any changes to the brand or model of fan in more recent units that could explain this.

    Regards,
    Rafael
  • Rafael,

Thank you for quick response. Please check and let me know, what could be an appropriate solution to get rid of this noise. I was thinking to open the box and disable the fan or remove the fan, but I am not sure, if the electronic inside the tracing box could work nicely without the fan. In addition, I have a couple of more questions.

    1) Does tracing using XDS560v2 Pro work faster over LAN compared to USB?

    2) Do you know any offline tool to visualize and examine the tracing data of XDS560v2 Pro, e.g., can I record the data on a computer in a file, which can be examined later? Could you recommend something?

I am using XDS560v2 Pro with TMDX570LC43HDK. I observed that somehow my  TMS570LC43xx MCU is getting pretty hot, but luckily it is functioning as expected.

    3) Does tracing cause overheating the MCU?

    4) How can we do tracing, if XDS560v2 Pro with Adapter C20Ti connected to another kit Launch LAUNCHXL2-570LC43? Do we must need this MIPIETM 60 pins connector on board instead of C20Ti?

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards,

    Farrukh

  • Farrukh,

The fan brand, model and noise are shown in the short clip below.

    3326.Fan_noise.mp4

    1) USB2.0 High Speed is always faster than 100M Ethernet (the maximum speed of the ProTrace).

    2) You can export the Trace data to a .CSV file. Check the document referenced at:

    http://downloads.ti.com/ccs/esd/documents/users_guide/ccs_debug-main.html#trace

    3) Well, the Trace data transfers are done with very fast switching output ports on the MCU, therefore an increase in power consumption and temperature is always expected - I have never done any measurements per se, but Trace alone shouldn't increase the temperature to dangerous levels.

    4) Yes. For Hercules devices you need to have the full ETM MIPI 60-pin port. It is not possible to perform core Trace on Launchpads.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael
