EVM430-F6736: Using this module for measuring power quality and load monitoring applications

Part Number: EVM430-F6736
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDM-THDREADING

Hi,

I am using EVM430-F6736 for metering applications. I would be using the evaluation kit for determining the input power quality of supply and load monitoring applications.

Is the micro controller on the evaluation kit suitable for signal processing required in these applications?

Can the kit be interfaced with a SPI interface microSD card breakout board to store data on the micrSD card?

Which are the other evaluation kits which I can use for these applications?

Best Regards,

Abhishek Grover.

  • Hello,

It sounds like you've already purchased the EVM430-F6736. This board is a single-phase EVM with energy measurement capabilities. If your application requires more than one phase, we offer other EVM's that support multi-phase applications.

For accessing the SPI interface on the EVM430-F6736, the RF1 and RF2 headers near the top of the board would allow you to access the necessary SPI pins. As a general resource, take a look at the Interfacing the MSP430 With MMC/SD Flash Memory Cards app note.

  • No, I have not purchased this EVM. My application is single phase. I wanted to know can this EVM be used for power quality and load monitoring applications or I should use any other EVM or SoC based solution?

    Best Regards,

    Abhishek.

  • Hello,

My recommendation depends on the power quality requirements of your application. For basic features such as measuring RMS current and voltage, active and reactive power, active and reactive energy, power factor, and frequency, the EVM430-F6736 will work fine.

For more advanced features, I would recommend taking a look at the Total Harmonic Distortion Measurement For Energy Monitoring Reference Design (TIDM-THDREADING). The TIDM-THDREADING reference design implements power quality analysis in a three-phase energy measurement system (but can be used in single-phase configuration). Power quality monitoring and analysis has an increasingly large role in improving the reliability of the electricity grid. The design measures Total Harmonic Distortion(THD), monitors voltage sags and swells, and measures phase-to-phase angles to help determine phase sequence and prevent accidental phase swapping. Along with these features, this design also supports measuring fundamental voltage and current, fundamental active and reactive power, active and reactive energy, Root Mean Square(RMS) current and voltage, power factor, and line frequency.

Unfortunately, the EVM430-F6779 that was used for this design is back-ordered, but the available hardware and software design files should be very helpful for you. As a workaround, you could purchase the EVM430-F6736 and port the code from the TIDM-THDREADING (F6779-based) design.
