MSP FET430 UIF is not found by CCSv4

Hello,

I'm currently struggling with the device which is not found by either CCSv4.2.1.00004 nor IAR Kickstart. WinXP Pro. SP2 v2002

The MSP FET430 UIF is shown in Windows Hardware Manager as Virtual Com Port. According to this file: http://focus.ti.com/lit/ug/slau278f/slau278f.pdf (Appendix C)

CCS, configured with the target as TI MSP430 USB1/MSP430 [MSP430] (tried all USB and LPT ports...there are no COM ports visible in CCS)

gives me following error:

Error initializing emulator: No USB FET was found (which is the same with no device connected)

IAR Kickstart is producing similar results.

Many people are experiencing this kind of Problem, but it seems to have no simple solution.

What do I need to do to get this running?

Hello Christoph,

A few questions to start:

What MSP430 device and what development board are you attempting to program?
Have you attempted uninstalling this hardware device and reconnecting the FET tool to automatically reinstall the hardware?
Have you attempted manually reinstalling this as outlined in Appendix C of the MSP320 Hardware Tools User's Guide?
What other types of troubleshooting for this issue have you tried?

Hi Austin,

I'm trying to program an MSP430 F5529 device on a MSP-TS430PN 80USB (rev:1.2) board.
Yes I tried to install different versions of the driver. The one that comes with the IAR Kickstart IDE, the one from CCSv4, the driver from the FET wiki.
I've tried all these in the manor described in the user guide. (Except the one driver from CCSv4 that came with an setup routine)
Only tried the two IDEs with different drivers.

What else can I do?

hi christoph

are u observe two led flashed red-red-red-green while power-up on your emulator

which appears to indicate correct operation (it means your emulator hardware is working).

Hi nikhil,

Yes, I do observe this LED flash pattern. Red-red- and than stays green.

Hello,

I've found the Problem: The FET does not work with virtual machines too well, seems it's not fully USB compilant.

On a native windows installation it's working perfectly.

Hi Christoph,

which virtual machine software do you use? The tools work perfectly using VMware (www.vmware.com) workstation/player and VMware fusion (on a MAC OS X host).

From my testings in the past virtual box doesn't work.

Hi,

I'm using Parallels Desktop...something must go wrong with bridging the USB device. But thanks, I'll try VMware on occasion.

Isn't there a version of CCS for native Mac OS X? Its based on eclipse, so why wouldn't there be one?

Would it be a good idea to use the GCC toolchain with Xcode or eclipse?

Hi Christoph,

as far as I remember, the latest Parallels edition should do the job. I've tested both before I made my decision to buy VMware Fusion.

Sad to say, but at the moment there is no CCS for native OS X available (but maybe in the future). Maybe you want to read this http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP430_LaunchPad_Mac_OS_X regarding your question about GCC and OS X.

I am using a 2009 MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.6.8 and Parallels 6.0.12092. CCS4 with the MSP-FET430UIF works great, if I get CCS to recognize it has the FET connected!

Usually, when I bring my WIndows XP virtual machine from suspend mode, I have a hard time getting CCS to recognize that it has a FET connected. I normally have to reinstall the driver to get things working. Sometimes, if I connect the FET with no target before bringing the virtual machine from suspend, it works fine. If I bring my virtual machine from suspend mode without the FET connected, then it messes up the windows driver and I have to reinstall it.

If I run System Profiler and look at the FET entry on the USB, I should see all the fields with values. If I see one missing, like the current required, I know I have to reinstall the windows driver.

I found I can get it to work reliably by trying to connect to CCS, see it fail. Then, select the USB device, disconnecting it from the Parallels tools and reconnecting again. CCS then sees it.
