EVM430-FR6047: Waterflow measurement pipe materials and amplification

Part Number: EVM430-FR6047
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EVM430-FR6043

Hello,

I purchased the EVM430-FR6047 and the transducers AW5Y0980K04L193Z from Audiowell. I am making some tests for water metering with the transducers placed outside the pipe.

In the tests with PVC pipes I had quite good results, but starting tests with metalic pipes (like the ones in home) I didn't receive any signal. I have compared with oscilloscope the received signals with PVC and Metalic pipes, and using the metalic ones there is no signal in the receiving transducer.

1. Have you tested the device with metallic pipes? There is something Imust take into account?

I think that my problem is that I need more power in the transmision signals, in order to receive something with different materials than PVC.  Maybe it also would help to increase the number of rebounds with the "V" configuration of the transducers.

2. There is any way to amplify the transmision signals? What would you recomend to amplify it?

Thank you in advance, I will be waiting for your response.

Kind regards,

Ferran

  • Hello Ferran,

We have not done extensive clamp on testing with metal pipes.  There is extra attenuation going through the metal and there can also be signal that rides along the outside of the pipe producing noise on the receiving transducer.  Some basic testing was done with the EVM430-FR6043 which includes an external RX amplifier, but we don't have test data available for metal pipes.  You will likely also need to change some of the filtering on the FR6043 amplifier circuit to work for 1MHz as it is targeted at 200-400kHz currently.
