MSP430 radiation immunity

Dear TI,

I'm looking for a COTS component in order to choose the CPU for a Nano-satellite. I think that MSP430 is suited for my application but I've some problems because I have to know some information about radiation effetcs. I know that  "University of Surrey" has  tested this processor in term of TID (total ionizing dose)...Is there somebody that has tested this processor in term of SEU and especially SEFI? (I hope both cross section and Let th).

Thanks in advance

Marco Scappatura

  • Unfortunatelly, we don't have any data what radiation the MSP430 withstands and can not make any assessment or recommendation here. In this case the customer would need to do his own test for that.

  • Thnaks for the answer...

    so...

do you know where I could find the information I would to know?

    Best regards

  • Marco,

I haven't heard of any Universities performing those tests, but MSP430 chips are sent into space with the CubeSat (www.cubesat.org) project.  You may try to post a message with them or email someone there to see if any of their teams have tried any of the tests you mention above.

    thanks,

  • I know it's a bit late, but after a LONG search I finally found the paper where the MSP430 was tested for radiation. The paper is titled "Characterising Wireless Sensor Motes for Space Applications" (yes, that's the British spelling of characterizing). It was presented as part of the "Second NASA/ESA Conference on Adaptive Hardware and Systems(AHS 2007)". The paper is available of IEEE if you have access. The test was part of a system called TelosB that used the MSP430 in it, and no anomalies were detected up to the tested 30 krads TID. Hope this helps for future searchers!
