Does anyone have any links, or otherwise usefull information regarding how the MSP430F5XXX can interface the CANopen network.

The 430 doesn’t have a CAN protocol controller, you need to get an external CAN controller (note this is in addition to the differential bus transceiver which is always needed). There are some available on the market (not from TI) with SPI but also a parallel-type bus interface (from Philips and others).

For an optimized TI-only solution I would recommend the use of a lower-end TMS470 device or a C2000 device.

There are requirements for an in-vehicle low power solution that neither the TMS470 and C2000 device offer. NOTE to TI marketing. Add a CAN controller to your MSP430. Add functionality to wake up the 430 from sleep on receipt of a can message. You will sell a bunch.

Hi,

have there been any new developments regarding CAN with the MSP430 series or could you suggest something new to get a CAN controller connected to the MSP430 series.

we currently don't have any plan to develop MSP430 with CAN interface. You can either look at Tiva product family or C2000.

Probably look into something like this -- http://www.microchip.com/wwwproducts/Devices.aspx?dDocName=en010406 SPI-accessible CAN controller. Also need the transceiver/PHY which is available by many vendors... as I understand it using NXP's TJA1051T/3 allows you to interface a 3.3V level CAN controller directly without additional level shifting hardware. Note the transceiver needs 5V power, datasheet for that chip is here: http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/TJA1051.pdf ... you need the "/3" version to allow native 3.3V level I/O to it. I think TI might make some CAN transceiver (physical interface) chips too.

Does this booster pack actually work with the MSP430F5438A , this is sort of the same setup I have with a CAN controller (MCP2515), CAN transceiver (sn65hvd230).? Do I need an external CAN drivers to actually implement this in my design.

Although for those wanting a quick solution it is fairly easy to implement using an external MCP2515.
