GSM sim900a interface with msp430f5529 lp

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5529, ENERGIA

hello folks,

I am using gsm sim 900a made by simcom for my project. The coding part is done on Energia using software serial and at commands to receive a message. The gsm connects to the msp430f5529 and gives network indication but nothing displays as such on serial monitor.

Even i have tried this out with msp430g2 using default serial port. Initial connection is made but the serial monitor repeats  "ERROR" message.

Please give me a proper documentation of the interface between msp430G2 or  msp430f5529 and Sim900.

  • Gauresh:

You may have a voltage translation problem...typically, the F5529 will run at 3.3 volts, so any UART connections need to go thru a voltage translation to get from the Sim900a to the F5529.

In the past, I have used https://www.sparkfun.com/products/449 to go between a 5529 board and computer.

    Hopefully, that helps.

  • Hello sir , I am facing the same problem as above .I am using msp430f5529 and sim900A.  The solution you suggested seem to be the one I'm looking for. However , I didn't understand as to how to connect the rs232 cable .can you please specify , how to connect the rs232 cable ? Should it be connected between the PC and sim900A or between the Msp430 and Sim900A.

Apologies in advance if it's a stupid question .

  • The adapter Todd mentioned will be connected to the LaunchPad. From there you will need a cable to the SIM900 board. This is one connection - additionally you will have the UART bridge from the LaunchPad to the PC via the USB cable. But to test the SIM900 board, I would first connect it to the PC without the LaunchPad and send some stuff from a terminal program. But this of course requires a RS232 port on the PC - unfortunately this port slowly dies out these days.
