MSP430F5438A BSL what I need?

Hello everyone,

I have to implement a BSL bootloader on MSP430F5438A. I have no previous experience with BSL that's why I would like to ask you: What software and hardware do I need to implement BSL on my chip? I want to load new firmware trough UART. I am using IAR embedded workbench IDE.

Excuse my bad English, I hope you get the idea.

Why UART and not USB? Why are you using a USB chip when you are not using USB?

Please correct me if I am wrong but, as far as I know MSP430F5438A does not have build in USB module.

Hi Radoslav,

You are correct the MSP430F5438A does not have USB. It has a UART BSL already pre-loaded in the BSL area of the flash memory. If you want information about how to load code using this built-in BSL, please see the document www.ti.com/.../slau319 and it also has software www.ti.com/.../slau319. You can use that BSL Scripter software on a PC, with a hardware tool such as the new MSP-FET (black) or the BSL rocket board, to interface with the UART BSL. You also can use an MSP-EXP430G2 Launchpad as a hardware go-between to interface the PC with the board instead, by following www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slaa535 and its associated zip file as well.

There are many posts on BSL on the forum as well, you may be able to find some good advice just by doing a search of the existing forum posts as well.
