MSP432 Launchpad Frozen - Please Help

Hi, I was working on a UART + CP2102 - Connected to the PC.

  • The Launchpad was receiving power from USB and the Rx,Tx of CP2102 were connected to pins 9.6 and 9.7.
  • Every thing was working perfectly.
  • Suddenly the PWR LED on the Board switched off and CCS threw error that the board cannot be accessed.
  • The USB port is working properly. I do not see the TI Debug connections in my Device Manager.
  • I noticed one thing - the USB portion of the board, where the DC regulators were gets very HOT. I dont find this witn my other launchpads and other dev boards from other manufacturers.

Any idea why this happened or if the board is toast.

Thanks,

Sam

  • Hello Sam,

My initial thoughts here is you may have accidentally shorted something on the board here and caused a failure. Can you check the voltages of the 3V and 5V lines to ensure they are being powered correctly?

I also noticed the CP2102 is an USB to UART bridge. Is there any particular reason you are using this? The MSP432 has this functionality built in via the backchannel UART. This means you can have two connections via a physical USB interface. Normal USB and the backchannel UART.

  • Hi Jace, Thank you so much for the reply. I got this sorted out.

    • This is a rare case - known and documented issue - where in a launchpad with have issue connecting to a PC with a Renesas USB controller. Mine has a NEC controller. Fortunately and mysteriously after I re-started my pc the connection issue was gone. I also tried it on a couple of other systems and it looked fine.
    • My first hunch was the "voltage overload" that you have mentioned. I tried this with my other MSP432 board while monitoring the serial dongle v and c. The v and c were under the threshold.
    • I am experimenting with serial communication across multiple mcu + fpga + scb via usb. I need all the UArts and SPIs on the board. Thats why i was using the serial com converter.

    Thanks,

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

We are in the process of looking at similar overheating issues with the MSP432 LaunchPad. Do you still have the overheating LaunchPad in question?
