Cannot program MSP430F169 with external voltage

Hello!

Most is in the title, but here are more details.
I have to update the firmware of a +/- 10 years old device based on F169.
As it was a very small scale development (4 devices + 1 in my lab), I still use
JTAG, the fuse is not blown.
The problem is that I cannot program it with an external power source. It
says that the device is unknown. (Yes, I have changed the power jumoer for
JTAG power vs battery power). The exat message is "Fatal error. Could not find
device (or device not supported). Session aborted."
Any idea of what may happen?

Thanks,

Pascal

  • Hello Pascal,

    Some questions for you:
Are you using 4-wire JTAG or SBW?
What FET Tool are you using?
Can you connect with the battery disconnected and via FET-power?
Can you connect and try again (external power) with the following sequence: Connect battery to power up, then connect JTAG, start new Debug session?
Are you able to share schematic portion that just has your JTAG setup?

    Regards,
    JH
  • Hello!

Sorry for all that mess, it works. I don't know what happened.
Maybe a bad contact somewhere in the JTAG connection.

Are you using 4-wire JTAG or SBW?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but F169 has no SBW. I'm using the regular 4 wire SPI.

    That's about it!

    Pascal

  • Pascal,

I'm glad you were able to solve your issue! Yes, I was mistaken and the F169 only supports 4-wire JTAG.

    Regards,

    JH
